It looks very much like the winding house & headstocks at the old Wigan Junction Colliery at Bickershaw.

I would think very early 1900s.

The photo that crabby posted isn't watermarked 'Alamy' but apart from that it looks like the same one.

Anyway your link shows that I was right when said it looked like Wigan Junction Colliery.

Tough life back then for mine and mill workers  (to name but two) and their families. We are lucky, few of them would have made it to our ages, and if they did even fewer would have pensions or savings.

Interesting to see that the original was colourised. I remember a portrait photo of one of my grandmothers brothers who was killed in trenches in the great war that had been colourised but not so extensively. It used to hang in the guest bedroom of my parents and was a little spooky. I was sad to find it had gone when we inherited the house.
