Overheard
« on: Mar 30, 2019, 10:18:53 PM »
I'm going to sound like Brian now.....

I was in Birmingham City centre this evening and overhead what was said by one beggar who approached another.  "You wanna go round the corner, I just made 20 in half an hour"!
I saw an ad for burial plots.  I thought to myself, "this is the last thing I need".

I hope you told them to get jobs & start paying into a private pension.

P.S. How long did you stay on that corner?  ;D

Oo-er...What sex were these beggars, Min? Is there a pub around the corner or was it an invitation to a quick knee-trembler?

Admittedly it was a woman beggar (beggaress? ;D )  who approached the male beggar who was in begging position.  I think she was a genuine 'professional' beggar cos' she was carrying a sleeping bag and piece of cardboard!

There were pubs/clubs all around.  I had been in the City centre most of the day and the beggars didn't come out 'till the early evening.

I've recently watched '60 days on the streets' a three episode Channel 4 documentary by Ed Stafford.  He sleeps out and mixes with beggars in Manchester, London and Glasgow.  Interesting to see how some are not homeless, some are very vulnerable, many are driven by addiction etc.  Some beg because its lucrative, even though they may have a flat, benefits etc.   Whilst the problem has increased in England, Glasgow has gone some way to reducing the numbers.

A beggar getting 20 isn't a surprise.

I wonder if it is illegal to beg in a place where you can't make the national minimum wage in an hour.

20 pounds for half an hour.!!!!

My old man used to ask me ,when he was at a loose end.  'Do you want to earn yourself a couple of bob'?
Seeing it only lasted 5 minutes I guess I was on a good rate way back then.

Your definition of quick must be considerably different from mine if it took half an hour old owl  :)

Still as I've said before it pays to advertise.  ;D

I go in to Southport every 2 weeks, while the mrs is shopping I stand and watch these people begging
along Lord Street which is the main street I stood one day about 5yards away and heard this chap say to someone -well that's 55 quid so far and it was only 12-30 pm--not doing so bad are they.
