Can anyone tell the reason they bring wood chip to the nest?

Logic suggests that it's for nesting material. Lots of it available in the suburbs...

They use woodchip, or similar, to prise up loose bark on trees if they think there's an insect underneath.

On holiday in Cuba a few years ago, I was walking back to our room and heard a loud, very persistant hammering.  It was such a peaceful place, that it seemed a bit thoughtless.  I climbed the steps to our room and there was a woodpecker hanging onto the top of the door surround and hammering the cement next to the surround.  He had made quite a hole!
