Classic car
« on: Apr 20, 2019, 10:39:55 PM »
Had this one between 1993 and 2004, finally when I turned 70 I decided it was no longer fun crawling over and under it. We used to go to shows about once a fortnight  through the summer, towed a trailer tent with it so we could take advantage of the beer tent.

Having a senior moment here. Is the model a Capri?

Looks like a Consul Classic to me! circa 1962

Did that model have one with a sloping roof as well rather than the cut away rear window?

It became the Capri (61-64) with the fast back coupe body version.

Unfortunately my memory does not serve me that well. The Anglia had a rear window that sloped backwards like the Classic, but I don't recall a sloping roof.

Edit: I thik Cassandra has answered it.

There's one in Mike's pic to the left of the caravan. A rare motor car these days.

The Classic came out first in 1961 with a 1340cc engine, it was upgraded in 1962 to a 1498cc the Capri followed in 1962, it was a 2 door coupé version of the Classic, both had the same engine and running gear. A GT version of the Capri came in 1963 the Ford 1498cc breathed on by Cosworth.
I liked the cavernous boot and front disc brakes; when the original engine started to fail I replaced it with one from a bored out Escort Mexico but fitted with a pre crossflow head, so apart from twin choke Weber and 4 branch manifold it looked almost "original" - straight through exhaust meant it didn't sound original!
Nowadays they are getting a bit expensive up to £12K for a Classic,  £15K for a Capri. 1960s prices were around £700-800.

Harold Wilson used to drive a Ford Classic - I have a vague memory of seeing a photo of him standing by his.

A friend had the Capri version in the early seventies. This has a gas flowed head, twin Weber 40DCOEs, lumpy cam and free flow exhaust. It could hold its own with the (more remembered) contemporary V4 Capri 2 litre!

The hottest one I can remember was a Classic which had been converted to a soft top with a Rover V8 under the bonnet. I recall chatting with the owner on the club stand at a Wroughton Notalgia show, he'd driven down from Shrewsbury, he said "it gets a bit light on the steering at 115MPH on the M 5!!"
Just visible, the maroon one on Left, the pic was the Classics 40th anniversary year (2002), we tried for 40 cars at the stand but "only" got 38.

I get annoyed when people rave about MGA, MGB, MGC, they are not real MGs, the last real MG was the TF in the 1950s.
