Cricket World Cup.
« on: May 29, 2019, 10:19:56 PM »
Begins tomorrow with England v South Africa. A tough game for an opener but I'm hoping for a cracker. I also think this is one of the best squads we've had for many a year and I don't think they'll be a million miles off winning it.
Wish I'd looked at the betting now.. ;)

I am not a great cricket fan but prefer the ebb and flow of five days to the one dayers. As it is a six week tournament I can see interest waning!

As far as I am concerned, 50 over games are better than nothing, but 'proper' cricket is the first class game. And as for 20 overs and this daft '100' idea - Yuck!

There's room for all forms of the game in modern times. Any cricket fan has a place in his heart for a traditional 5-day test but the short forms are really good fun and I enjoy the expansive hitting and intense crowd involvement.

As with most sports, cricket has been ruined by the media, reduce the length to minimum, and add gimmicks to keep the couch potatoes interested long enough to see the adverts.

The modern game needs money, whether the old guard like it or not. I love the warm, drowsy afternoons of test-match listening but the game was in the doldrums for years before the short forms, and the sponsorship, and the broadcasting brought in the finance we have now. Cricket is no longer the bastion of the public school ethos it used to be. It's more inclusive now and the players are athletes rather than gentlemen though hopefully both.
Dorset, I'm afraid I disagree with all of your post.

Wow! I didn't think that 311 wsa nearly enough - certainly (I only get commentary, not visual) England's batting seemed a bit down on what they showed against Pakistan, but to crush South Africa by 104 runs and bowl them out with 10.1 overs to spare - and that Stokes catch - which I have seen on the website - incredible!

Ye of little faith...Though hearing Bairstow go for a first-ball duck did engender the willies rather..Archer performed well in the 'new-boy' shoes and the all-round performance was excellent. Stokes's catch certainly a magic moment. Great start!

Nice to see the West Indies looking good - almost like their old selves with the ball!

Yes..As a man who's bet on England depends on them going unbeaten, it was rather worrying..Though their batting might be vulnerable..

It does rather make one wonder about Pakistan - they do blow hot and cold, but 0-4 down to England, then this....

Oh, and what do you think of young Archer? He looks the real deal so far (fingers crossed!)

A very talented young man, Jofra Archer and still learning. A plus are his Barbadian roots which will annoy the Windies and might make them slightly more vulnerable to his bowling. Not only that, he's no slouch with the bat either. Makes him a great No 11..
