Woman left to starve by carer

I was absolutely gobsmacked by this story. Apparently the worker's boss "cancelled the care package" because she accepted the lie that there was no one at home.
Should she not have checked first that a vulnerable old woman had not been left without care?
One of those situations where there were failings at more than one level.

And sadly, not for the first time. There are 'carers' who care and there are 'carers' who don't. It's a poorly paid, badly controlled and often badly managed sector and the only way they get away with it is because vulnerable people don't, or can't, complain. When I cared for my mum, with carer's help, the vast majority were salt of the earth, lovely people but some were less likable in attitude and empathy and the thought of them alone with her wasn't comfortable at all.

That poor woman, what a horribly sad end to her life.  I agree that the job is very poorly paid, all caring work is undervalued IMO.

That is absolutely appalling. To my mind it is little better than murder. The carer has cared for Ms. Cleworth - according to that report - for 'years', so must have known her physical state. The company had been told by the hospital that Ms. Cleworth had been discharged and sent Burrows round to her - and she didn't check she was in the house. I hope she gets life - but I don't suppose that she will

Pretty much the same way as when a hospital withdraws food & drink.

Please God.. Let me die  in my sleep.. Or drop dead in the Co-op..
There are some wicked people out there and even with family watching over it isn't always safe..  Some people are born with a cruel streak..
One just hopes they too get a cruel carer..
I would rather have a male carer.. they seem to care more..
Everything will be alright in the end, and if it’s not alright, its not the end.

An old friend of ours recently died, went to bed, fell asleep and didn't wake up.  Thats my preference too Scrumpy.  Not sure about the Co-op though 😯😯

That's how my brother went - it was an awful shock. He came up for Veronica's funeral on the Saturday, stayed the weekend, I saw him onto his plane Monday morning, spoke with him on the phone Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday morning his eldest boy phoned to tell me Vernon had died in his sleep that night/early hours next morning

This is a sad reflection of our society as much as it is a condemnation of the care system. Did this poor woman have no neighbours, friends or relatives who noticed that she was slowly starving to death ?? As a society we always look for someone to blame for not doing their job rather than saying what, as a society, can we do to help look after the vulnerable of those amongst us !!

Close to the services you will need next though GM.

I am not at all sure about the huge push to keep people in their own homes.  I did it with mum for as long as I could but in her little care home there is always someone on hand if she needs them and they are lovely people.  It's a bit like moving into a retirement flat though - I have just been to see some and really don't think I am ready.  It is so difficult to get the right time to move and there is so little provision of the old fashioned "retirement" homes which I think mum could have been better in earlier on.
The vote for Brexit was a vote to take back what we hadn't lost in order to lose what we actually have.

It is difficult to decide when to move, if ever.  Independent living in the right type of accommodation, with support if needed, has been shown to enhance older people's lives.  Especially when there is no close support nearby.  The shortages will get worse unless local authorities get their finger out, and work with housing specialists to provide a range of options for older generations.

Absolutely agree with you.
However I would point out that the 'crisis' in Social Care & Housing is not of the making of the LA's.
SC is one subject that can only be resolved by central government pouring money into the pot.

As for housing, this all started back with Maggie and her idea of everyone should be given the chance to buy their own home. Right to Buy then came about. A brilliant idea with the money raised by the sale of old council stock the LA would have the funds to build new replacement dwellings. Errr that was the hope. Unfortunately central government would not allow it and clawed back from the LA all of the sale proceeds. That money was then used by the Treasury to top up their piggy bank leaving the LA with fewer properties to let and no money from the sale of the rest.
Once again central government will have to dig deep and return this money to enable a huge building programme to start.

We don't have a housing problem, we have a bloody population problem, that our braindead politicians have totally ignored for years.

Apparently hospital waiting times are at winter crisis levels & it's only mid-summer.

The person being interviewed by the news presenter mumbled something about the reason being due to not enough medical staff & an ageing population that required more treatment & more complex treatment.

But just like with housing, the interviewee skilfully dodged the the fact that the UK's population is increasing by a quarter of a million people every year.

Diasi,  I might have guessed us oldies would get the blame, despite the fact we have put more funds into the system than anybody, unlike foreigners who come here and get treatment straight away, never having put a penny in.
