Fortunately for me, Liverpool has a pedestrian area and Chester does to some extent so I can still go shopping.  Like you, I avoid pollution as much as possible.

Beach holidays in the middle of nowhere with hardly any traffic is my aim - and as many of them as possible!

This house has always had sweet water but I think, in general, the filtration of our tap water is excellent. I wonder how many people ever clean the inside of the tap's spout?

Did that yesterday in the bathroom. Used an old toothbrush and gave the interior of the spout a good rubbing. Turned the cold tap on and the amount of black gunge that came out was disgusting.

We've lost track of people that have asked us  is it safe to drink the water?  Can only say yes have drank the local water wherever we are in Europe, why not the locals drink it and are still aliven 8)

There can be a question of acclimatisation, so it may be that in some places water the locals drink perfectly happily would upset the digestive system of anyone not used to it. After all, a few hundred years ago people quite happily drank water from the nearest river - would you chance doing that today? And I don't mean obviously contaminated rivers such as the Thames at London Bridge!

Def wouldn't drink out of the Thames Mike but do drink from mountain streams regularly with no I'll effects and water tastes so pure unlike a lot of tap water.

Never thought of it Zoon, I'm off with the disinfectant and an old tooth brush shortly though!

I gave it a go today with a toothbrush and the teeniest speck of black came out.  The pipes were flushed out in this area a couple of months ago so maybe that's the reason it's clear.

No. Sorry to see you are tarred with the same brush and same mentality “Money” When I retired I worked with the EU for free 4 years to get Potable water on the Costa Blanca. I used be on Costa Blanca Radio in Javea speaking about water I have all the recordings on tape.
One pace of info.  Is you can go to your water company and ask for a copy of their Days Lab report. :D

I wonder how many of you have actually toured your local sewage treatment plant. It's an eye opener when you are told that over 80% of the water you flush down the toilet ends up in the 'fresh' water system to be reused as drinking water.

And why not? 80% of the water you flush is just water. Of course we should reclaim it and purify it and use the by-products to make fertilizers as any school child should know. Don't schools visit sewage treatment plants any more?.
