Early 60's bands
« on: Sep 17, 2019, 12:33:26 PM »
I've just been browsing one or two of the threads on this forum and was prompted to ask if any members used to visit one of these dance halls in the early 60s: The Putney Ballroom, The Orchid at Purley, The State Ballroom, Kilburn and The Embers Ballroom at Harlow?

I played in a band called "The Jury" at those locations . We grew out of a trio that backed singer Jimmy Justice and have been trying to contact the guys with whom I played but I'd be happy to hear from anyone who remembers listening or dancing to our music as well. Other bands playing at the same venues included Cliff Bennett & the Rebelrousers, Chris Farlowe, etc.

The transport we used in those days wasn't reliable enough to risk going north of Watford, so we had to stay close to civilization but I'm sure you had some entertainers up there to keep you happy - just a little sad you missed out on us ;-)

Wasn't there a group in the 60s called the Bootles or something who started in the north and eventually joined polite society down here?

Good to hear from you guys - pity you couldn't help me in my search but I appreciate your replies.

Hello Mike and welcome to the forum,
regarding the early sixties bands , I used to go to the local town hall on a Saturday night with a number of other chums, and some could dance ,

as those of us who didn't, or couldn't,as we  listened to the band of ted heath, as lita rosa, and even the late dicky valentine,
even  Eric Delany, had a band with  good singers,

of course there  were other bands to which my memory has let me down, but I'm sure others forum members might remember their names.,

of course the girls in those days many went in small groups as the boys did, many  trying  their luck to see if they could find a girl friend, or dancing partner, it was a lovely time and a great night out was had by all,.
