Autistic Child
« on: Oct 31, 2019, 03:32:02 PM »
Been covered on sky news channel today a 15 year of girl been locked in a room without a window for several years. Her fathers allowed to visit once a week and allowed to hold her hand through an hole in the door. Meal times she as to move to the back of the room and they slide her meal through. Her bed is 4 inch thick mattress on the floor. She is locked up to keep her and others safe. Her father says she as never hurt any one. She is not on her own there and dozens of children throughout the country locked up. The story brought tears to my eyes.

She is locked up to keep her and others safe.

Well that's the reason.

She isn't locked up just for fun.

After reading the following article, I feel for the father and his daughter and in my opinion the NHS in their area have let them down,

I have a great grandaughter with autism and ADHD and the NHS in my area are very helpful towards her and her mother, she also goes to a main stream school and not a special needs school, thanks to her pediatrician who updates the school after every 6  monthly appointments.

It's certainly a difficult one. The lass is clearly at an extreme end of the spectrum but in the absence of any clinical and care-need details speculation as to the rights and wrongs of it aren't really helpful.

Zoony I can only pass comment from the experience of my own great grandaughter and the NHS in my area.............what I do know though is, that girl should never be locked away in the way she is and her father having hardly any contact with her.....there are proper care facilities for autistic children/people such as her with experienced helpers and carers to look after them and understand them and their needs and not treated the way that young girl is treated.........in my opinion it is disgusting to treat that young girl and her father in that way and I feel very sad for them. :( :(

And anyone with an ounce of compassion would agree Bee but...my point stands. We know nothing of the whys and wherefores of it. Hopefully we soon will and have some sort of explanation. I'm in no way excusing it but.

My last word on this thread.............people wouldn't treat a dog the way that young girl is being treated and I hope whoever sent her to be treated in that manner is found out and is either heavily fined and lose their job...........or is locked up and treated the way that young girl is.

It is a form Stockholm syndrome that you care in the community idealists have.
Give the nutters and the dangerously vulnerable ones the benefit of the doubt.
No. That costs lives.
Until/or if we understand the human mind better, we must continue to take strong, emotion free measures.

As I said, she's not kept in secure isolation for no reason.

Apparently she had been doing very well with her own room on an open ward.  When she turned 18 there were no places available for her on a similar adult unit.  This unit does not appear to be specialised for her needs.

very true,it's no way to treat anyone, it sounds like something from the dark ages.

If it was safe for her (& those around her) not to be in secure isolation, she wouldn't be in secure isolation.

Do you think the staff do it for amusement?

Seclusion can often be implemented when the unit is under-staffed. If that situation is common then so will be seclusion, for all the reasons Diasi suggests. Such a patient needs 'special' staffing which is expensive. On the other hand the tariff for her care will also be expensive, sometimes £2-3000 per week. A modern mental-health care unit can't handle such cases easily and historically, never have been able to without restraint, heavy medicating or seclusion. Often in combination.
