It came up in an election time TV debate a few years ago when whoever it was was trying to argue that massive immigration did not create a shortage of housing.
It was probably Diane Abbott, she's good at calculations.

These comments about Diane Abbott's lack of maths ability just don't add up.

I recall a TV program called "how to get a council house" when one talking head said that only 10% of houses went to immigrants!

Why any while there are British born people on the list?

Immigrants should not be entitled to register for social housing until they have been here for 10 years and should be made to pay double taxes for that time. No free schooling or NHS either. And definitely no benefits.

They arrive in already debt to British taxpayers.

I think that she's a very misunderestimated woman.

'Immigrants' may already have been here more than 10 years. In areas where there are surplus council properties, and there are some, if they are eligible (as we all know, many immigrants aren't) then councils will give them tenancies.  There are a couple of estates here that always have flats and maisonettes available. If locals don't want them, should they just stand empty?

If there are council houses that their tenants don't want they should sell them.

And these people cuss and swear at the people who detain them, they are caught fair  and square, they show their character and what scum they are, as you say most are from abroad.

If people are already tenants then they don't come into the equation as they are already housed.  It's the people on the housing register (waiting lists) who are not queuing up for these empty homes.  The councils in question still want rent, (they do sell some) so they offer them to people who meet eligibility criteria, (so no illegals, no asylum seekers, etc) rather than leaving them empty and vulnerable to vandalism.  They are not in highly desirable areas, but then neither is a lot of private rented housing.
