I've just watched the first episode and enjoyed it for what it was/is. I'm not sure it's fair to compare a tv series to a feature film. The film condenses their version into a couple of hours, a tv series has to think longer term and has several layers of sub-plot going at the same time. It's also written for a target audience who have probably not read the book, might've seen the film but need to be attracted by the same things that are commercially successful modern examples.
It's interesting that it portrays the era in which it was written in a somewhat exaggerated way, something Steam Punk-ish about it..Contrasting that with the apocalyptic future is a nice touch.
I must admit to puzzlement over the scene when they're frantically searching for the dog and she's gasping and breathless with a fag in her hand!
All in all I enjoyed it. Good, daft fun, and look forward to the next episode..
