Flight
« on: Jan 13, 2020, 04:01:38 AM »
It had not been the most pleasant of flights. Heavy turbulence had meant that the passengers had had to keep their seatbelts on all the time, but at last the flight was over, terminating in a landing that was far from textbook. As she prepared to leave the plane, a little old lady turned to the steward.
“Tell me, young man,” she asked, “have we landed or were we shot down?”

I've been on some like that in years gone by. Worst landings are when there is a chance of ice on the runway. I think they like to set fire to the tyres to melt it or at least it feels that way.
So long and thanks for all the fish

About 30 years ago I flew BA into Cork. Foul day, very, very windy with lashing rain. As I boarded (can't remember if it was Heathrow or Gatwick) the captain was welcoming us aboard over the loudspeaker - a lady captain, first I had ever encountered. My surprise must have registered on my face because the stewardess fixed me with a gimlet gaze and said 'Don't you DARE say anything' As if I would - I know my place.
The landing was interesting - the wind was absolutely on the nose and the captain brought us in about 15 feet, if that, over the numbers - and then the a/c (Boeing 737) just didn't want to come down any further (perhaps it was frightened!) We must have been nearly half way down the strip when the captain decided enough was enough. Stick hard forward then back and the 737 came down like a lift - which was an arrival not far short of the 'were we shot down?' scenario.
