Movie 1917
« on: Jan 13, 2020, 08:30:34 PM »
My wife and I went to see that new movie this am, cannot praise it enough for its production, casting and accuracy to detail. Best war film I've seen since Saving Private Ryan, possibly one of the best war films ever on the big screen

I look forward to seeing it. Watched Joker last week. Found it slow, tedious and uninteresting.

And so many continued to suffer for years afterwards. Unlike today where all have the care and treatment they need and are well supported in good  housing...Wait..think I'm confusing the reality with a dream I had once.
Use 'em up and throw 'em away. Little has changed in a hundred years. Damn shameful.

Thank you. I always regarded Private Ryan as the best War saga I've ever seen. One of my late uncles was a D Day marine and he said the sound of the bullets hissing through the water and clanging on the underwater obstructions as they landed was so horrifying to recall that in his late 80's he ran from the Cinema, to the pub opposite for a large whisky the memory was so vividly accurate.

I'm amazed in today's vacuous world where the heroism and bravery of forebears is often treated with disdain that it got made at all.

I understand that Spielberg read the true story of the four actual brothers and that was that. Not one to do things by halves our Mr Spielberg..

Fans of War films might like to take a look at Band of Brothers. 12 hour episodes iirc. Closely based on the history produced by Stephen Ambrose from audio testimony given by survivors of a US infantry company from training through D Day to the end of hostilities.

Started to watch 'We Were Brothers' the other evening. Absolutely dreadful film! Every war-film cliche in the book and then some. Worst kind of trite, by-the-numbers American rubbish that was done better, for the most part, 50 years ago.

Not sure if you were replying to my Band of Brothers mention which isn't a film and is for the most part based on fact.

Give it another few years & there'll be stoodunts demanding that the Cenotaph & all local war memorials are demolished because they glorify war.

No, not directly. It was a superb series. I was just venting.  ;D

Thanks for your clarification. As you say it was a excellent series and Ambrose's book is a good read too along with Pegasus Bridge which features British glider troops and some others whose titles escape me. I made the query because I wouldn't want your comment on the film putting anybody off the series.
