Ah it has just occurred to me that Alex has problems posting them. I thought her comment in my test thread about changing thread titles was because she wondered what the hell it was all about.

So should you read this Alex you will need first to say what device, operating system and browser you are using and whether or not you see a line of them above the box you enter post text into.

You can just enter the appropriate text in directly too. I don't know many but without any spaces

:  ) gives :)
;  ) gives ;)
? ? ? is ???
: P :P
: ( :(

These aren't for this simple machines forum but I expect some will work..

I added a couple above that worked OK as you can see. Unfortunately
:Z which should be and would be very useful for running club and similar threads doesn't work from the text shortcut.

Thanks for the replies,  yes I can see the smileys above, they just don't work on this laptop.  I'm using Microsoft Edge which I'd never heard of until I bought this, it's also Windows 10 S
When I use the desktop I can use smileys, that PC is Firefox

:)

thanks Klondike that  : trick works

There's list of all the manual symbols for the emojis but you'd be better off just installing Firefox onto your laptop.

You also need to disable Windows 10 S mode.

I'm not sure why I need to disable Windows 10 S mode, apparently once you've done it you can't go back.   The spiel is it's much safer in this mode what are the advantages Phil  ?

I'd never heard of it but when I looked it says it's a locked down version of Windows that only allows installs from the windows store and all you can browse with is Edge.

I'll check Edge on my laptop but I'd suggest that this windows mode seems to be aimed at those only slightly less paranoid than those who refuse to use computers at all. I doubt that more than a tiny percentage of computer users are using it and I see it as yet another Microsoft trick to try to get folks locked into their platform in a certainly doomed to failure repeat of their earlier attempts to make Windows on laptops and desktops look like their crappy phones.

If you are happy with the lappy aprt from the smilies then just leave it as it is otherwise take Diasi's advice.

Would you buy a car if it only allowed to do routes that the maufacturer chose for you?

It stops you from being locked into whatever Microsoft decide they're going to make you use, such as forcing your laptop to use Microsoft Edge as it's default browser.

You can't install Firefox or any other non-Microsoft applications.

If you're unsure then make a system image of your laptop as it is now so that you can restore it to how it was before you disabled Windows 10 S.

And this is Edge on Windows 10.

The smilies don't work just by clicking them for me either. :(

The smileys etc stopped working for me weeks ago after an automatic update,  so although I still use Edge for most things, I installed Firefox for PF

To get the smilies working in Windows 10 you have to set the default language to US.

I have a simpler solution - don't use Edge.
