I have a simpler solution - don't use Edge.

Indeed  ;D ;D ;D

Posted with Opera in Windows 10

Now modified with Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 UK, smilies not working

Now modified with Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 US, smilies working  ;D ;D ;D

Therefore Alex has three options.

Stick with Windows 10 S UK & be unable to use smilies.

Stick with Windows 10 S & change to the US language to use smilies.

Disable Windows 10 S & install Firefox / Opera etc to use smilies. :o ;D ;D

Very strange. It's obviously javascript and I can't see how the language pack can make any difference. Presumably Microsoft will eventually fix it.

Apparently it's something to do with the interpretation of Unicode.

Years ago you couldn't log into DataEase if the computer time function was set to automatically adjust summertime.

They seemed to have no problem with the interpretation before the automatic cоckup according to what Ashy said.

She did the other day. I think she is just using the characters that get converted to smilies by the forum code as I suggested.
