5G Huawei,
« on: Jan 31, 2020, 08:22:01 AM »
does any one under stand or know why we need to go to china for the forth coming 5G connections to which  the Chinese company Huawei  and to which the government have given them  a 35% stake ,

once this work has hopefully been carried out successfully how much will the price of having a faster broadband speed cost, as some where along the line the work has to be paid for by some one, and I assume rightly or wrongly that some one will be the customer who will have to pay for this faster service,

Q; do you have any thoughts regards 5 G  in general,.

Probably through subsidies from the Chinese government Huawei have become World class producers of telecommunications equipment. Like everything that comes out of China their equipment cannot be matched on price and BT used Huawei equipment extensively in their network. If you have fibre broadband there is a very good chance that your local cabinet has Huawei equipment inside it.

Telecoms equipment used to be mostly purpose built circuitry dedicated to whatever task it was built for but these days it is increasingly less specialised and it is the software that it runs which determines its functions.

The Chinese are notorious for industrial and political spying and the fear is that the software running in Huawei equipment may allow secret access to its functions by the Chinese government so they could maybe siphon off data or reroute requests through their servers and spy on what our government and businesses are up to. There is also the possibility that the system could simply be shut down.

5G is a wireless data network and will not directly affect your home broadband except that it is becoming increasing possible price wise to simply switch to wireless providers and give up on home telephone based broadband which may make prices fall for that. For example I will be using an unlimited data 30 day rolling contract SIM at my caravan this year which will let me admit to grandchildren that there is indeed WiFi there. Previously they would have chewed through my months data in a day or so. I am considering just using it for my home broadband instead of the fibre package I pay for 12 months of the year but use only for 6. 5G would offer an ever closer performance to home broadband and it is mostly a question of pricing. Another reason why Boris's full fibre rollout could be a white elephant.

What I know about technology could be written on the back of a postage stamp.  Saying that I find what I hear about 5G truly frightening, machines, appliances that communicate with each other, artificial intelligence, the stuff of the Terminator. I've also heard that these masts emit dangerous "waves" or whatever they call them. Then to make this worse we let the Chinese in on it, does our Government really know and understand the implications of all this and do we?  In my case no.

This isn't going to go away. I've read two further stories on the subject in the last couple of days. A bunch of senior Tory MPs are asking Boris to reconsider and a report from Nigel Farage that the Americans are decidedly unhappy and it could well impact our security relationship with them.

The Americans may well be worried about security but their main unhappiness comes from not developing their equivalent system fast enough for world domination in sales and whatever else.  There is also the bit about having to catch up on their ability to spy all over the world.  China's ambition is to make lots and lots of money from selling stuff to whoever has the money to buy it. So the likes of us are between a rock and a hard place whatever we do but still in the race for selling our technology.

I hope Boris stays with his decision, self-serving MPs and Nigel Farage notwithstanding. He must avoid being persuadable and stand by his decisions.

I've also heard that these masts emit dangerous "waves" or whatever they call them.

The 5g masts don't emit anything that the existing masts don't already emit, all that's changed is the frequency & the technology to vastly increase the speed & the bandwidth.

No, what has really changed is that the Luddites have found a new source of fake news/project fear

Anyway, it's not anything that we in the rural areas will have to consider any time soon, parts of Lincolnshire still can't get 4g.

I agree. On my visits to Skegness I had noticed that.

Where we live we can't get any Three Mobile signal whatsoever, EE is virtually unusable, O2 is functional & Vodafone is rated as having the best signal but we manage ok with giffgaff on O2.
