dress sense how we look today,
« on: Feb 04, 2020, 09:01:37 AM »
Back in the 60s  then  it was normal to see many women more so than men then wearing clothes in  a time  that made many women look  really smart, and the fashion shows and magazines then showed items like ladies wearing two piece suites , tailor made and to my mind looked really smart ,

many women then wore skirts or dresses that showed off their figures and many really did look really nice, dressing sensibly, taking care to look good, of course today there are many women who continue to look nice , with a little make up and taking pride in their appearance,

seeing the young ladies walking about today again not all but some with jeans cut and slashed in many places to which clothes shops charged top price as the young people will wear and pay good money for stupid clothes, shoes or hand bags,.

that some wear and as for make up not many of the younger generation bother as some look like they have just got out of bed, and in a hurry ,
of course this doesn't apply to all women but the small group who enjoy looking a mess, walking about with clothes that really doesn't fit, or wearing studs  in their ears, or eye brows, and some even in their belly buttons, or any where else,   thinking they look smart rather than a mess,

mean while many men but not all, like to walk around similarly with jeans and jumpers that have seen better days , and shoes or trainers that need either polishing or cleaning, politeness for some seems never to have happened as some not all, seem to have no manners, others dress as if just having come out of a charity shop , even though some clothes that are bought are very good,

it seems today anything goes and so I think many people don't care what they look like, ….so has the day of fashion and style gone out of fashion completely or is it that people simply cannot afford or are not able to buy better clothing.

of course this is only my thoughts ,.

Q;  with so many events taking place  such as shops closing.. high unemployment, etc, what are the causes, and is this the reason why fashions seem to have gone out of favour, what are your thoughts, and will you share them  with us,

My wife likes to wear nice frocks & would not be seen in jeans with holes in them, she is no snob, but has certain standards.

I thought it was folks forced into wearing charity shop stuff and poor quality charity shop stuff to boot until I saw them in a shop in town.
So long and thanks for all the fish

Again it's generational? Our generation had their fashions back in the day, some of which appalled our grandparents..Let's not judge the young for wanting to do their own equivalents of Hippy, Punk or whatever fashions..Most that I see look smart enough and well-groomed. Some will always want to be individual about their hair and dress which identifies them to like-minded peers..Clothes no longer maketh man imo..

I haven't changed my dress code much. I had to dress smart in my suit for work but as soon as I was home it was into the jeans or leggings. I'm still wearing jeans or leggings most days now, with a sweater or t-shirt. But living on the farm most of the year it would be daft to wear skirts/dresses they just don't fit into my life style at all unless it's a night out.
My hair's much the same too, used to be past my waist but now it's only half way down my back. Did take a mad turn once and have it cut short, hated it and couldn't wait for it to re-grow.

My mother was a really elegant and smart lady until the end of her life.  When I was young we didn't have many clothes but they were always washed clean and ironed.

I have always struggled with my weight, some things I wouldn't dream of wearing,  if I wear trousers I have a top that covers my bottom and wobbly bits.  But the fat women I've seen in skin tight leggings that leave nothing to the imagination.  My mother instilled in me to check your rear view in the mirror before you leave the house.  Some of these women don't even check their front view!  It's not only women, the men with big fat bellys hanging over the top of their trousers.  I'm not picking on fat people just that you should dress to suit your shape.

Fancy wearing torn and raggedy jeans and leggings, it's really an insult to the poor of this world.  Obviously if your doing a dirty job you dress appropriately but here really isn't any excuse for being dirty and scruffy.

Jacqueline.. I love your description of ‘bottom and wobbly bits’..
The older people moaned about the mini skirts and crop tops that showed our midriff back in my day.. Nothing changes..

I wear jeans,t-shirts ,dresses and skirts..

Scrumpy,

Back in the old days when I was slim (I was always on a diet) I wore all the fashions, mini skirts up to my slim botttom, no wobbly bits then.  I still love clothes although I'm a size 18/20 now I try to make the best of myself.
I blame my three children for ruining my figure, and a husband that still wears the same size clothes as he did 50 years ago, he can eat anything and I'm very short on willpower.  All their fault lol!

Sounds like me Jacqueline.  I was slim, never dieted, never thought about it. Wore short skirts, knee boots or platform shoes.  Loved fashion.  Health issues in my 40s meant I put on weight, which I've lost and put back on more than once! I don't worry too much now, I just try to get a bit of exercise in the pool, or walking.

Like you, I try and take care with my appearance.  My mum, even when she was getting on a bit, never went out without putting on her lipstick.  I'm the same.  I still like nice clothes, why not?  I don't do young fashions (mutton dressed as lamb?) but neither do I rush towards 'old lady' styles.

I'm in jeans most days, no tears in them though. :)   I only possess one dress that I bought for a wedding, but I've lots of skirts which I don't really bother with now, preferring jeans.  Comfort comes first nowadays !

I studied Dress design and dressmaking for 5 years and worked in London in the 50s. Then had my own design label and specialised in Wedding gowns, and ball gowns. Loved clothes. Had an article in Vogue, with the photo of an Evening gown.  I designed, cut the block and then the pattern. Then cut the toile and fitted it on my client. Made all the changes and finally cut the fabric. The Brides and their mothers happiness at the dresses, was such joy for me. I worked long hours, sometimes well into the night. But I had such a rewarding happy time. My designs were all one off. The clothes I made, all fully lined and on the reverse you could not see the seams. They could be worn inside out !!!!! I had to learn to work in inches, and do fractions to a 16th of an inch ! Drawing the blocks from size 12 to 18 or more...When we retired , going with my husband to Norwich in the summer, we were dressed so smart that several times we were asked by the italian or chinese tourists, to pose for them to take our photo...I enjoyed a lovely life with my Michy. When working in London, always wore a suit, with shoes hat and gloves to match. Even now, do not go out without one of my hats on....gmx

Granny Moss,

How wonderful it must have been to make beautiful gowns.  Although I come from a long line of dressmakers and tailors, my efforts were not that good.  I made clothes for myself and my baby daughter, but doing fitting on yourself is not easy and my dresses were never as good as I would have liked them to be. I gave up in the end. But have made some amazing curtains.  Huge three width interlined monsters to fit the bay Windows in my old Victorian house, swags and pelmets too.
