More surprising is that he is survived by his wife of 65 years who herself is 100!

I'm Spartacus

He was so good in ‘sword and sandals’ roles and Westerns that, to me, seeing him a suit seemed out of place somehow

Many of his better films were ones he produced as well as starred in like 'Lust For Life', 'The Vikings' and 'Paths Of Glory'..Had enough confidence in his talent to put his own money in. It paid off though. To a modern eye (ish) he had a definite tendency to overact a bit, imo..

allegedly he was a 'method' actor Zoon
the story goes that while rehearsing the role Spartacus on the cross he was laid on the floor arms wide practising his speech  when Peter Ustinoff came in, laid down beside him arms also out and said "theres a phone-call for you Spartacus"

;D  Dunno 'bout the 'method' acting..Him. Brando, D Day-Lewis, Pacino, DeNiro et al..Seems like a good excuse for being a hard-to-live-with, pain-in-the-arse drama queen to me. I'd ask their families first..

'Ace In A Hole'.. He was reporting on a man trapped underground..
I was very young when I watched it but it left a great impression on me.
