The Egyptian origin is one theory, the one I know is that he was invented as a character by Florence Upton who wrote children's books, and his appearance was based on minstrels.

Such a pity that part of the word became a widely used derogative term for anyone with dark skin.  So the golly is now persona non grata.

I remember about 50 years ago my cousin was collecting Robertson gollywogs.  She had a big collection and I asked her today if she still has them and she has.

There is absolutely no evidence for this according to the OED, it's a well worn myth apparently.

Wogg may have been derived from GOLLIWOGG which was first used in a book by Florence Kate Upton called "The Adventures Of Two Dutch Dolls And A Golliwogg" published in 1895.

It is better not to believe anything you read on the Internet without spending some time looking for corroborative evidence.  :)
