Vaccine Candidate for COVID-19 (latest news)
« on: Mar 31, 2020, 09:48:57 PM »
Johnson and Johnson (J&J) announced that it has identified a primary vaccine candidate from among the products in its development pipeline. J&J will pursue clinical trials and production of the vaccine in partnership with Janssen Pharmaceutical and the US government’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority program. Clinical trials in humans are expected to begin by September 2020 with the hope of an Emergency Use Authorization in early 2021. J&J has committed to produce more than a billion doses for global use, including production in both the United States and overseas. https://bit.ly/2UwmImJ

That sounds great, but they have to do a lot of clinical trials first and make sure it is safe.

I expect there may well be others in the pipeline. Any vaccine obviously has to be safe, work and be able to be made in massive quantities at prices even the poorest nations can afford.

Most nations and pharamsuticle companies around the world will be working flat out to develop one, IMHO

Lets hope they are pooling research and not all working independently to re-invent the wheel.

It may well turn out that more than one approach produces a better outcome. I don't know anything of the details but apparently vaccines can work in more than one way - certainly some are classes as "live virus" ones while others are not so every avenue needs exploring rather than channeling all effort down a signle course which may turn out not to be the optimum one.

I think the private pharamsuticle companies will be racing each other to get to the big bucks first

I don't think big bucks or any bucks at all, should be made out of this. It's a national emergency and we should not have to pay for their help, it should be freely given.
