From that you may now construe that the term is to be 'Only black lives matter'.  Matter has been appropriated by the BLM movement.

It’s definitely going to far now 😳

"North Devon resident Yasmin Beck said: 'Unfortunately your slogan "Dog fouling matters" uses a satirical play on words which undermines the Black Lives Matter movement."

I picture Beck, who certainly doesn't matter, as a politically correct, virtue-signalling vegan, probably stuck in the hippy era.

For those who are unsure what virtue-signalling is, below is a classic example from zoony.

"Alex..You could've written UK finds a way to end child poverty and it would've met the same mean-minded reception from some".

Some good articles in Spiked.  This makes for interesting reading.

Last para from that article...

We should not pretend the battle against racism is won. But we live in one of the most tolerant societies on Earth, and that has to be one of the foundations of any honest conversation about what needs to be done to improve things.

I would suggest that one certain way of backtracking on the progress made is for BLM riots and black on black knife crime to continue as they are currently.
So long and thanks for all the fish

The change I believe was the influx of far too many immigrants followed by the birth of the snowflake culture, free speech at your own peril these days.

1947 would for me be good as well.  It was the year before I contracted Polio and life changed forever, not in a good way.  Nevertheless, I know what you mean.  Despite (or in spite of) technology and scientific advances life has gone from Miss Marple to Judge Dread.  The motto is 'Just because I can I will', the world is a far more unsavoury place.

Just reading this morning about hippy crack (nitrous oxide) abuse by the young and the dreadful damage it can do to the nervous system.  Do they not know, or do they just not care?

Perfectly summed up in a few words mick. From when I was a kid to now is chalk and cheese.

Before my memory but 1947 must have been a time of great hope, looking forward to a national health service, great industries secured for the nation, full employment, peace, and a return to normality.

After moving house on an almost annual basis 1947 saw us settle down in a house which was to stay in the family until, after mum's death, sister Sheila moved out in the early 80s. As I have mentioned on other threads, it lacked most of what would be regarded as basic amenities, but by the time he became bed ridden in 1950 (and died in 1952), despite the red tape of the Attlee administration, dad had had electricity installed, had a hot water supply put into the kitchen and replaced the Belfast sink with cupboards and a normal kitchen sink, created a bathroom and toilet to replace the outside toilet and tin bath, installed a fridge. How he achieved all that when you just about had to fill in a form in triplicate before being allowed to sneeze will forever be a mystery to me

Perhaps it was before building regs came into operation,1960s I think, but could well be wrong.

My daughter wrote one of her Maters thesis' on the development of building regulations, so I already know a bit about this.  The first ever building regulations were bought in after the great fire of London (1666).  Although rudimentary, they have been under continuous development since that time.  There were certainly quite well developed building regulations by the 1930's in the UK, though the very prescriptive regulations as we know them are a more recent innovation.

Back in the days of Attlee's government getting permission to do anything was a right pain. An uncle of mine set up a small engineering company, employing a handful of blokes to produce an accessory (memory fades) that had something to do with car roof racks. Applied to have his works building connected to the electricity supply - and nothing happened. After several weeks of inaction from the authorities, Pom decided enough was enough and he and his lads dug up up the road and made the connection themselves. He set aside what he reckoned would be the cost of what he was using - it took the electricity board, or whatever it was at the time, several months to realise what was going on but they had the sense to accept Pom's money and keep quiet. Life under Socialism!

I think it is right to say that most electricity was either supplied by a private company or the local authority and they tended to cover a fairly small area with various different supplies and even dufferent shaoed plugs. It may have been controlled during the war.

I can remember as a kid the local electricity board was NORWEB (North Western Electricity Board) and we had 3 different types of plugs and sockets in the house.

One sunday the fuse blew halfway through cooking the roast and my mother sent me to the local shop for fuse wire. The shopkeeper said "Im sorry but I cant sell you fuse wire on a sunday". I began to cry that if i went home without it I would get a belting from my dad but she was firm. It was the law and there were people in the shop.

Outside a neighbour saw me crying and took me to her house to get some fuse wire. Later on there was a knock at the back door. It was the shopkeeper with a card of fuse wire, saying "I cant sell this to you on a sunday - there are too many snitches about and it could cost me my lisence. But theres no law says I cant give it to you."

People were like that back in the early 1950s.
