After moving house on an almost annual basis 1947 saw us settle down in a house which was to stay in the family until, after mum's death, sister Sheila moved out in the early 80s. As I have mentioned on other threads, it lacked most of what would be regarded as basic amenities, but by the time he became bed ridden in 1950 (and died in 1952), despite the red tape of the Attlee administration, dad had had electricity installed, had a hot water supply put into the kitchen and replaced the Belfast sink with cupboards and a normal kitchen sink, created a bathroom and toilet to replace the outside toilet and tin bath, installed a fridge. How he achieved all that when you just about had to fill in a form in triplicate before being allowed to sneeze will forever be a mystery to me
