They just don't get it.
« on: Jun 29, 2020, 09:42:19 AM »
Understandably, the ever widening gap between the rich and the rest of us has been knocked off its prime spot near the top of the vomit agenda for a few weeks.  Today in my first read I found that David Beckham has just bought himself a new McLaren supercar.  Next page, Jason Statham (my wife informs me he is an actor) has just purchased a similar model.  Next page, Gordon Ramsay has just taken delivery of a new £2million Ferrari.  What are they thinking of?  None of these cars are practical machines, you can't take the family shopping in them or for a picnic, they are simply rich boys toys.

How tasteless! do they not understand that there are currently millions in crisis who are choosing whether to pay the rent or eat and many who cannot afford to keep up the payments on the family motor?  This is disgusting consumerism on a grand scale and is sure to make everyone struggling to keep their heads above water feel even worse.  They just don't get it do they?

Whether or not they get it, clearly they don't care - but then is there any reason why one would expect them to? At least their expensive toys have made a contribution to the Treasury's coffers, and as gas guzzlers they will contribute more per mile than you or me. Personally, I don't give a damn what they drive - as you say, pretty impractical for day-to-day living - I'm happy with my Mondeo, which cost a lot less than £2 million!

I am so glad that I have no interest in big and expensive motor cars. Still I believe they are built and cleaned by ordinary people so it does some good in the world.

Ashy, they could have supported the car builders by buying a Mondeo like Mike.

I agree, I won't have a word said against the Mondeo they're great cars.

If these overinflated ego types choose to spend their hard earned on supercars, let them get on with it and much joy may these supertoys bring them!  I really don't know much about any of these characters except Jason Statham, who seems to specialise in Hollywood tough guy roles nowadays, was once evidently a Great Yarmouth market stall trader so I read.

I agree with xetog, these people have little taste, just lots of money.  But the money goes into the economy, it provides jobs, so let the overpaid keep splashing the cash.  Who knows what charities they also support.  Perhaps not Gordon Ramsey, although his swear box must be overflowing.  ;D

Good point. All that tax paid on a supercar will finance a lot more immigrants. illegal or otherwise for quite a while.

If we were all living in slums and poverty, would we be happier or more miserable? What if we were living in the middle east with all the wars goin on and on ? Where  would be there for refugees to go on a boat ? If we are 90% wiped out of the Earth with this virus, would the 10% left, be happy ? The way things are going....in America they are objecting to wearing face mask....The virus is having a ball....It is Ring a' ring a' roses time, again....and white crosses painted on doors.....We are doomed ....! Dear me, I hope this is lifting the gloom a little....I could not drive a Ferrari....but perhaps some of the money the multi rich are spending, is doing some good for the masses....I hope so. I do not have a car, or designer clothes, but I do not feel any disanvantage because of it. I have a roof, that does not leak, few pennies in the Bank, enough to eat....few friends coming round to have a laugh...and pondering how quickly our lives will pass.... :D ::) gmx

Oh come on you cannot get the same fun and exhilaration with owning and driving a Ford Mondeo and say a Ferrari. If people have the money that was legitimately earned why not indulge themselves with something different and special?
You could say that people should only holiday in Blackpool for a week in a boarding house instead of jetting away to the West Indies or maybe a cruise around the Med.
As for cars I must admit that when I used to drive I once bought a new Jaguar XFS and loved every minute of it. Just sitting in it caused me to smile - much better than the Lada 1200 I bought back in the early 80's for £200 in a local auction.

Before I gave up driving I was halfway to buying myself a Maserati which to me is indulgence but nice.
