In the 'What's Everyone Doing today ' thread I said I'd done Sweet Fanny Adams, my Mum used this odd term years ago and it was only today that I wondered where it came from.

The phrase ‘Sweet Fanny Adams’ came into popular use in Victorian England it means 'nothing or very little'    But there was a real Fanny Adams who lived in a rural village in Hampshire and on Saturday August 24th 1867 she was abducted and murdered in a most gruesome way.

You learn something new every day on t'internet, any more odd phrases  ?

Zooni....I love God, and I am sad that you think he is drunk. If he was a drunkard, he could not have created the Universe. OK...we have no proof that He did...but also, we have no proof that He did Not.... :'( gmx

Well, if God created the Universe, considering how arsy-versy it is, s/he might have been a bit tipsy.  8)

God created the world. If anyone calls you a racist point out to them that God started it. Now Fanny Adams was a real person but the expression is a back formation from 'Sweet F.A." as Zoony said earlier. Similarly Gordon Bennett who founded the New York Herald although the name is not unique.

Lots of phrases come from naval terms..the 19th century in particular.
My area as a youth hosted ones such as:
All over the hopitt.
Bit black over bills mothers.
This afto.
Crafty as a cart load of monkeys.
The ten o'clock horses will get ya.
Dirty bleeder.
Yitney.
etc....
Masks are muzzles

Chill nonna..I hate the idea that God has to be sober all the time just cos he's 'God'. It's not my belief, just a quote from a musician I admire. Personally, I have no monotheistic leanings and no beef with your God.. :)

Here are some of the phrases from my Liverpool childhood:-

God bless you and your one eyelash
Same to you with knobs on
I could eat a child's bottom through a cane chair
I could eat a scabby donkey
If you cant fight wear a big hat
Fur coat and no knickers
Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the blind obedience of fools.
