Scrumpy - Banstead
« on: Jun 30, 2020, 11:06:30 PM »
I noticed your council is Reigate and Banstead.  My lovely ma-inlaw went to school in Banstead.  It was called Beechcroft then, and was an orphanage/workhouse school run by the Kensington and Chelsea Board of Guardians.   The school was on the 'breezy downs'.

She always said she went to boarding school.  Quite sad when we found out that it wasn't Mallory Towers.  😦

Banstead.. Up high on a hill.. A short distance from Epsom race course..
We have to travel up Reigate Hill to reach it.. The boys from Banstead and neighbouring Kingswood used to travel into Reigate Saturday nights because all the (Action)!! was in the town..
The last bus home for them was 10:00.. All action finished at 10:00..
That was way back when we hadn't discovered Brighton yet..

We were only country yokels..

Sounds like good simple fun, before you found Brighton!

I just wondered if you'd heard of the school.  I know it was demolished years ago.  In the days before benefits I think a lot of children ended up in the care of the Guardians.  😢  We don't know we're born.

GrannyMac... I have never heard of the place you mention..

Blimey.. we didn't even read the papers back then.. The simple life for us..

My Nanna ended up in a workhouse... Her husband sodded off.. she had mouths to feed but no money to get the food.. Her husband was a farm hand so she had to vacate her home..
 No benefits back then..
