Jack Charlton
« on: Jul 11, 2020, 12:35:06 PM »
Jack Charlton, a World Cup winner with England and former Republic of Ireland boss, has died aged 85.
The former Leeds defender had been diagnosed with lymphoma in the last year and also had dementia.
One of English football's most popular characters, he was in the team that won the World Cup at Wembley in 1966, alongside his brother Bobby.
He made a record number of appearances for Leeds and achieved unprecedented success with the Republic of Ireland.

A self effacing hero. Once said he "was was not a great player, like our kid, but I could stop them being great".

Thank you Jack, god bless you and my sympathies for your family. Heaven has a new centre half today.

This tribute was lovely from Collymore
Rest in Peace, Big Jack. May the lake be tranquil and the fish be plentiful.

the problem today is the requirement for centre halfs to be footballers
like John Stone ? who thinks he is Pele and by trying to beat a man costs several goals a season
big jack was a brick wall, who could head a ball... he was a delight to watch

The old footballers were the best I agree with you, but the game has changed hasn't it ? .  Don't know much about John Stones, apart from he played for England.  I was thinking of Virgil Van Dyke when I said touchy subject !

funnily enough Alex i am a big fan of Van Dyke, yes he has boobed... it surprised me when i looked at the stats... the most passes in almost every game are between Van Dyke and Robertson... i remember Butch Wilkins being pilloried for his sideways passes, and he was mid-field

VVD doesn't make many mistakes Crabby !   and, I've always said the best Liverpool teams had a Scotsman in them   😉

sadly he remains Dutch even tho he was nurtured at Parkhead,
so you must mean Robertson..
all the jocks complain he never plays as well for Scotland...lol...
its a pity we dont have the rest of the Liverpool team in the blue shirts

Yes I did mean Andy Robertson.  Incidentally, I've read Virgil plays better for Liverpool than he does for Holland :)  You learn something every day as I thought he'd only played for Southampton and before that some Dutch team !!!!

Didn’t he write the Aeneid or something?
