I'm not against ID cards at all, if they were properly regulated they could help with illegal migration, stop and search , benefit fraud and NHS treatment eligibility for a start.

I'd carry an ID card tomorrow if they were used to stop illegal immigrants from getting any benefits or health care & kicking them straight back out of the UK, but they won't.

The only purpose an ID card will serve is me having to justify who I am in my own country.

We are all registered at Birth. When we get married, when we get passports, driving licences, council tax, e.mail addresses, paying for goods on line, shopping with a bank card, Banking accounts, insurances, etc etc...so, why all the fuss ???? All such fuss about nothing....We all have lots of numbers...we are but a number .....National Health, and my hospital number....so many numbers...silly fuss....gmx

So with all that, what on earth is the need for another layer? You are actually demonstrating how needless it is

or we might get a bar-code tattoo..

And you would trust it? Look at government’s record on IT. Not just the current lot, but back in time. Failure after failure. The definition of stupidity is to keep on doing the same thing and expecting a different result

One photo card that would biometrically hold NI, NHS, driving licence and citizenship details all in one place, including fingerprints, would get my support. It might make the job of the police and Border Agency simpler, and thats got to be a good thing.

yes it would likely progress into your bank card also, then if they wanted you they could just stop your card

When Blair outlined his grand ID scheme way back when, I thought it a good idea, but have since revised my ideas.  Blair failed with a civil service that backed him, I hate to think how the Tory's would fare. Even if things don't deteriorate as far as crabbyob believes (although I thought invoking Orville a nice touch), I have no faith in politicians dream projects.  Our elected representatives have few skills that lead to good technical decisions, hence their hapless approach to the current crisis and their reliance on some very dodgy science.

The old adage of a camel being a horse designed by a committee being very true in this case. A very good example is the current issue of test and trace or the phone app.  Rather than use tried and tested systems they went for a sophistication that does not yet exist, tried to force it through and failed miserably.  We have had so many similar examples over the years that I would say incompetence, or downright sabotage is the rule rather than the exception.
