It is believed to have hit a landslide, although obviously investigations are ongoing. Apparently the track it would normally have taken had been rendered unusable
. It was the 06:38 service. Don’t know about the specific area, which is north of here, but at 06:30 here, the rain was so heavy that visibility was less than 100 yards

Very sorry to hear of this. It appears to be an undetected land slip, and I think it is the first passenger fatality since Grayrigg in 2007 if we exclude a member of the public who died in Liverpool in 2011. RIP.

I'll pray for them, as if that'll do any good at all.

A mess. There will be a lot of questions about why it ran at all I expect. It looked a damned mess on the TV news and very fortunate that more weren't killed.

I would imagine that the answers will be revealed by the train's black box.

It's a bad do for those involved & a sad example of never knowing what the day will hold.

After reading a report I can see why the casualties were as light as they were....

The Class 43 InterCity train is said to have had six crew members and six passengers on board

So that’s a 25% fatality rate. Just as well there so few on board

And if the railways get their way they want the government to hike up fuel duty for cars and jet fuel for aircraft thus making it just as cheap to travel by rail.

Absolutely. Loki g at pictures of the crash, if there had been more folk aboard, it is difficult to believe that the loss of life would not have been awful in numbers.

So there were nine persons on board, not twelve as an earlier report said. Reading that, the potential for disaster had the rain been carrying more people was even greater than it seemed from earlier news.

I imagine there was confusion caused by somebody misunderstanding the three rail staff on board with one of them being a relief and translating that into 3 crew plus 3 relief crew. I must say the 6 crew sounded well ott when I read it but with today's rail unions anything is possible.
