I was thinking more of Victorian times and earlier. Was there anything less than a farthing?

I think a portion of chips was maybe 3d when I was young. They are at least £1 now.
So long and thanks for all the fish

Had a quick dip in Wiki, and can't find any mention of a less valuable coin, unless one cheats. Prior to 1707 a Scottish pound was only 1/12 the value of an English pound, so - presuming Scotland minted farthings, a Scottish farthing, in the old phrase, would have been worth 2/3 of 3/4 of damn all 😁

Clearly, ma'am, you are much younger than I! As a child I doubt I could have carried 6d worth of chips, never mind eaten them!

A lot of the prices for staples were pushed up by the "great shortages" and never went down by much after the sellers realised people would still buy at any price. There was probably a time when I remeber the before and after pricings but sadly my mate Al Symer has stolem them away. So who remembers these shortages all coming quite close together years back..

sugar
potatoes
toilet rolls
coffee
salt (iirc that one was just a rumour followed by panic buying)

Probably more but Al is keeping quiet about them.
So long and thanks for all the fish

Yes petrol. That was the Arabs after the six day war wasn't it? We either got issued or were going to be issued with petrol rationing coupons but it never happened. I'll check google.

Pretty much as I remembered. Al must be taking the morning off.

The butter mountain was a result of the EEC CAP along with the wine lake.

They were issued, but never used. I only got round to throwing mine away years afterwards

I've never seen a £5 note either, only on TV in old films...

yes it was strange how my grandads tales of how much he could do with a shilling simply annoyed me
yet my story of calling for my pal one wednesday night, he told me he was broke [or out of the game] as we might say, i replied  'no worries ive got ten bob' so off we went and had several games of snooker and four pints each.... sounds ok to me....lol

Well remember Wilson's twopence - the price of a scotch or other spirit in pubs went from 2/- to 2/2 due to extra tax. Used to plonking down a florin for a drink, folk were reminded 'don't forget Harold's twopence!'
