I do begin to wonder if those in cloud cuckoo land would like us to join them

I do not think so...Unless you can proove that you can support yourself...NO benefits ! And women MUST use their maiden surname, even if they are married.... :D gmx

Well: I suppose I am spoilt . . .

I'd like to live where I live in a small village in Bulgaria that is 30 minutes drive from a big town, BUT also
5 minutes from the seaside in Moray or Nairn.

We own a house in St. Andrews; but St. Andrews is poshified and a bit too urbanised for my taste.

Oh, and if all things were equal, a house in Hopeman.

Not much in Hopeman, but at least you'd be OK for shopping in Elgin.   I looked at houses in Burghead when we moved up here and I'm in Spey Bay & Garmouth quite often.  However I settled a bit to the east .
You'll have had your tea.

I always had a pipe dream of retiring to Bath - a beautiful city stuffed with antique shops.  However a dealer friend lives there and she says I would hate it in the season - hordes of tourists jamming the streets and often of the worst type. The types who wander into an antique shop with dogs and snotty nosed kids picking up and touching valuable things.
Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the blind obedience of fools.

I would have loved to have one more trip to my home town in Italy. I lived with my mum and dad (only daughter and had one brother...now all gone...) We lived next to the Cathedral, in the centre of the City, near the Castle on top of a mound, and the  City Hall. All lovely Venetian buildings, as Udine was part of the Venetian region. But this virus put an end to my dream. It is a bit sad.  I still have my memories.... gmx

snotty nosed kids
Now I come to think of it apart from infants that is something you very rarely see these days. At least I don't.
So long and thanks for all the fish

Ooh, candles!  😤  Wipes and tissues are basics in parents' bags these days.
