I checked. If you record TV programmes to be watched later, you must have a licence - it is stated quite clearly, unfortunately!
Mike
Only at the time you record them. You don't need one to watch old recordings or  catchup TV come to that so long as it isn't BBC iPlayer.

Sorry - that is not at all how I read it 'record for later viewing' is specifically mentioned

Yes you need a licence to record. Not to watch the recordings later.

If you watch or record programmes as they’re being shown on TV or live on an online TV service, or download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer, you need to be covered by a TV Licence.

It is just possible that telly is even worse here in Bulgaria.

We have a telly with no aerial, and we jack it up to a laptop so
we can watch Inspector Morse and Endeavor . . . and nothing else at all.

Sorry, but you are misreading that. The act of recording a live programme requires a licence. Couldn't really be any plainer. Press the record button  - and that's it. You have to have a licence. Whether you subsequently watch the recording or not is immaterial - it is the act itself which requires a licence

Did you have a licence when you recorded it? If so then you are breaking no laws watching it any time later.

Pity this board has no option to set up a poll then you'd get a wider range of opinions.

I'll have a hunt on tv licencing to see if I can find something definitive.

Yes - and I still have a licence. Thing is, I expect to continue to record off air - mostly cricket and Rugby and the occasional programme so will need a licence.

Yes you will for that. Orginally you were talking of a load of dvds which you had recorded TV programs on.

Of course unless it's BBC they might be on catch up.

i to have an Amazon firestick, and have IPTV downloaded on it, it would suit you Richmond, i take mine to India and watch every station on it, the only prob in India is the time difference, in the winter 6.30 in the evening is midnight in India.... but as long as you have decent internet, then you can get all the progs, Sky ect... plus you get thousands of movies, and TV series, just there on stand-bye for when you are fed-up
but you can still get bored...lol... yesterday i watched Tyson Fury beating Wilder in that first fight, i also watched it live on PPV at no extra cost....

I gave up my TV licence in June this year and have never looked back.  Everything I want to see is on Catch Up TV, apart from BBC programmes of course.   I have Netflix and watch films and UK/US series on there.

I may have this wrong, but I thought all programmes were on Catch up TV, so why would anyone need to record programmes to watch later ? (Excluding BBC )

Because catch-up is time limited. I have on DVD progammes I recorded years ago and which still get rolled out from time to time

Surely you don't need a TV licence to play pre recorded DVDs Mike ?
