More sad news. Dean Jones, the prolific Australian middle order batsman in the 80s and 90s, has died, aged just 59

Oh dear, how very sad. I used to love listening to him on TMS. The world is a less entertaining place without him

Was he one of the 007 villains?

One thing the dear old thing could never be accused of was villainy. Eccentricity, yes, villainy, no.

His birthday was the 23rd, 81. Good Lord, he was younger than me!

Oh how terribly sad, such good fun - up there with Arlott and Johnson for me. God bless Blowers and thank you for your life.

Dean Jones too, what a precocious talent and so young to die. Sympathy to his family.

His father was at Eton with Ian Fleming and is thought to be the source of that villain's name..

He was also a bloody good wicket keeper until a horrible accident ruined his career. He opened a pub for Shepherd and Neame near us 20 years ago in Essex and was brilliant company.

This news has ruined tonight and the next few days for me. Of course like the two I mentioned previously, they can and will never be replaced by anthing with that depth and quality again.

Alison Mitchell et al from Mumsnet are the new way to go! Pass the sick bucket please Alison.

I wonder if you saw him on The real Marigold Hotel Cass? Series 4 I think with the ego that is Britt Eklund and lovely Barbara Dickson plus others of little interest. Blowers, as always, was such a gentleman but I think he was glad to see the back of that particular adventure. Worth having a look on catch-up should you wish to enjoy his company again.

where did you find a report? I can't find an obituary for him anywhere. I know he has lived in Menorca for some time now, so perhaps the news is slow in coming.

Oh dear Mike, I may have done an Oscar Wilde..Somehow got the wrong end of the stick..my abject apologies to all. I shall go and find a hole in the ground to disappear into.
