I guess the song was written long before google but that's what the song was about..

 Not hard to understand why they had no idea about venereal disease or it's cause even though it was well known and 'treated' in the cities...

Oh I'd heard the song. I hadn't heard of the meaning of the lyrics. I could have lived in blissful ignorance of it. Now every time I hear that song I'll wish I hadn't read this thread.
