In this case it is almost certainly the channelled apparatus that collects rain water off the roof.It may be cast iron, galvanised steel, or plastic.

I remember our Community Health Council moaning at the cost of painting hospital  iron guttering every few years. Why didn't we use maintenance free plastic guttering. I invited any members who wished to try to entrust their lives to a ladder leaning against a plastic gutter 30 feet in the air in a strong wind - they gave up

but not reliant on a plastic gutter. Have you ever tried being at the top of a 30 foot, perhaps even more, ladder in a gale?
On the concept of not expecting anyone responsible to me to undertake a task I wasn't willing to risk myself, I have - I didn't enjoy it

Tis indeed a skill. I think people initially open up Brian threads hoping for some shopping advice.

I've been up some very tall ladders in all weathers but they were all the fixed type, some of them almost vertical. It's more fun in a cherry picker.
Yes the new thread is complete in itself it would seem.

Absolutely - what was the name of the guy - Fred Dibney or the like, who seemed to delight in prancing around the top of huge chimneys and the like whilst I hid behind the sofa

i did it for a while and 200ft up we wore safety harness, but whenever we hooked up your tools were 100% always out of reach so you soon stop hooking on.... but at the end of the contract we had to take the ladder down....lol... now that was a knee-trembler...

As soon as there is a response it will snowball. I did look at it but have completely forgotten what it was about. That too is a skill.

I must say I am surprised that Birmingham council doesn't keep its gutters clean, seeing as they seem to spend so much time in them after a good junket.
