There's often a man with a brazier roasting them outside railway stations in Catalunya during the winter..I tried them, as you do, but I think the idea of them is tastier than the reality..Bloody Bing Crosby..

Slightly more sophisticated.. The glowing brazier had a tin tray on top, on which said chestnuts roasted..If you did 'em on an open fire they'd fall frew innit?

A man said:you can always tell a lady, but you can’t tel her much.
I doubt it was Brian, despite’a man said.....
The RAF equivalent was you can always tell a pilot, but you can’t tell him much.

There was also: how do you know there’s a pilot in a crowded room? He’ll tell you

Our neighbour has - when we used to pop in to see him of a winter's evening, Veronica used to love sitting by that fire. His room is well planned - the door in is beside the fire so you don't get a draught whistling round your ears. In our house as kids both rooms with fires had the fire one side of the room, the door in the opposite wall, so your front could be toasted by the fire whilst the back of your head and neck was frozen from the draught!

Somewhere around Christmas 1968 there was a chap with a brazier used to sell chestnuts in Piccadilly Circus. They were rather expensive I think, can't be too sure of the asking price but it may have been 5/- or even more for a tiny bag. This was when chips were 6d in the suburbs.

Chestnuts can be boiled. You must make a cut on each one. Put them in a pan of boiling water with a couple of bay leaves. I do not remember for how long...sorry.   I think one can tell, when the shells are opened/split....They are lovely tasting and tender....gmx
