Belonging to this  " gathering of old people and reading of their opinieted opinions...I am amazed that I still get sucked in....."  Surely I could do better?...and pull the plug ?....and go down the drain where I belong.....Join my flock ?  If I was strong enough to do so, and liberated myself of the need to belong here...I would be so proud of such an achievement.... :D :D :D   But I am week, in fact, almost a forthnight.... ::) and you can find me here, when you look for some solace.....Bless you all.... 8) gmx

I too always think of a flounce as a frill on the skirt of an old fashioned dress or someone who behaves in an exaggerated manner. I can remember flounced dresses from the 1950s and 1960s when we did the jive and the skirts flared up to show the girl's underskirts - or sometimes their knickers. The skirt at the top has a flounce around the hem.

Until I read it here, I had never heard of a flounce being part of a skirt, but was very familiar with it as a verb - someone 'flouncing out' usually meant that they had lost a debate of some sort

I'd heard of both meanings Mike, but you don't see many flounces in today's fashion magazines 😁

It's like 'valance'..A word rarely heard these days but most folk of 60+ would know what it was..

I can remember a fashion for "peasant style" flounced underskirts in the 1980s and the lace frill used to show about 5 cms below the hem of the skirt. It looked as though the elastic in your underskirt had got loose and was about to snap. There were some pretty ugly fashions in the 1980s.

Sometime last year I bought 2 summer dresses on line...They are lovely prints, but rather long....One of them has a flounce around the hem....I never have liked flounces....I have not even tried the dresses on...still all the labels on them....

It could be the "flounce" that flounces me off them :D :D :D gmx
