At a loss to follow this. are they testing before the waste reaches the treatment point? Presumably so, but I hope that they also check if the treatment plants are killing the virus
I note that the WHO say there is no evidence that the virus has been spread through sewage systems, but that's a rather different point.

I saw the idea mentioned way back when that article was written or maybe even earlier. The idea was by checking the virus concentration in a town's sewage works you can estimate just how much infection there is in the town. With some decent calibration that estimate could probably be better than sticking swabs up folk's orifices. As it hasn't been mentioned again recently I'm guessing the calibration defeated them or when the test kits turned up in quantity they gave up.

Er, we don't have mains drainage here, therefore we must be clear! Woodside is, I suppose one could say, a hamlet of about 15 houses in all spread out along three miles of road

I did say towns. They'd have a problem here too as it happens.

I wonder how many sewage plants there are nationwide?

Rather a lot but I imagine they all get some sort of sampling on a regular basis to make sure they are discharging pathogens into the rivers.

It's an old report and was reckoned to be good news at the time for tracking the virus when we had no test kits

Nevertheless, if there is a problem with sewage, the BBC should go into it.

What evidence is there that this virus has come from human beings? It could be rats.

The rats all wear masks because of the pong so it can't be them.
