Am I evil?
« on: Nov 10, 2020, 07:20:00 PM »
My TV is wall mounted. The power socket for it is behind it and quite high. I can reach it. My wife can't. I fitted a remote controlled socket which we've been using for years.

Last night the TV turned off. I turned it on and a bit later it went off again. I put it directly into the socket and today gave the wireless socket some testing. It seemed fine so I put it back.

Once again at probably the same time 7 o'clock it went off. I turned it on and sure enough it went off again a little later.

So. A neighbour must have got the same sockets and they obviously can't be coded. My TV is back in the socket direct.

But ever since every few minutes I've been pressing the all on then all off then all on again every few minutes. I'll be keeping this up as and when I remember all evening.

My aim is to make whoever bought the same remote sockets think theirs are duff and either giving up on them or taking them back. So am I evil?

Apart from timers, I’ve never heard of remote sockets, and timers aren’t remote, of course. How do they work?

Mine are a different make but they work the same as any of these which have a remote control rather than the more modern WiFi ones

I think I saw them in a shop. Mine were cheap. The brand is Silvercrest which is synonymous with cheap Chinese tat.

Glad you posted. It reminded me to play with the remote again  :)

I find Lightwave a very reliable make, have had them for years with no problems

We have Meross WiFi smart sockets & switches but we also have Dewenwils wireless remote remote sockets for the TV & the TV LED ambient lighting.

They are individually coded so don't suffer from interference by other wireless remote socket controllers.

Why do you control the sockets for things like TVs that have their own remotes, or am I misunderstanding?

Leaving a TV on standby can cost you money. On the upside it does annoy the tree huggers.

Anoyingly I got too engrossed in a film to remember to do the click click thing but I've just made up for that.  :)

See what you mean. OTOH my recorder is frequently set for some future time, so not leaving the thing on standby isn’t really an option. With my memory, sure as eggs I’d forget to set it nearer the time - it has been known!

The freesat box just stays on. It's the TV and soundbar on the remote switch. With the WiFi ones you can tell your smart speaker to turn stuff on and off. If I can't get the neighbours to give up on their remote socket then I'll give up and just turn it on and off manually.

That sounds like the kind of tactic i would come up with!

I've put an LED night light in it in a different socket. Every time I see it off I'll press the all on button.
