Made in Britain
« on: Nov 15, 2020, 07:11:14 AM »
Makes you wonder what Britain will produce next. On the news this morning a firm as started producing real diamonds out of carbon found in rain water. It's what dreams are made of, but it was early in the morning so it may have been a dream. Certainly be a great export product.

Just been on the news again. They are real man made diamonds using rain, wind and sun. Got to be a great export trade and just in time for brexit.

Not sure if it's this and I haven't read it yet but it sounds like the same story

https://www.intelligentliving.co/diamonds-made-with-sunshine-rain-wind-captured-carbon/

Got to be a catch I reckon - probably costs more to make them than they are worth or maybe just dust diamonds only of use for coating tools.

Nope no catch mentioned. Apparently he is going into production. I reckon soon fiances will be demanding real Zirconium stones and telling potential suiters just where to stick those cheap and nasty diamonds.  ;D

No catch and they are the real deal Klondike, they showed an hand full of them on TV this morning. Made in Slough down south.

Just hope they create jobs in the jewelry manufacturing trade. South Africa diamond mining going to suffer.

South Africa diamond mining going to suffer.

I'm surprised he has survived this long...

It amazes me that someone even had the thought of making diamonds then doing it.

The raw material is cheap enough. I think it's achieving the huge pressure needed that is tricky. I think it was done before but only for tiny things for tool coatings but I may have just made that up...  :)

There's that thing that turns a loved one's ashes into a 'diamond'..

It looked like he was growing crystals in a bath. If it works you need only a small crystal to start it off, I must say I am sceptical that you can do it with diamonds.

The article says...

Hydrogen is produced by splitting rainwater molecules in an electrolysis machine using renewable energy. The captured carbon and hydrogen are then used to make methane, which is used to grow the diamonds.

So it's not crystals so far as I can see.

I've taken out my guesses as I found this which sounds like what he is doing and it is growing crystals but not in a bath.

The world is awash with synthetic diamonds already even De Beers sells them. The synthetics are mainly used for industrial purposes, but jewellers use them as much as they can because they are cheaper. You need to be an expert to tell the difference between a high quality synthetic and a mined diamond.

Are synthetic diamonds that hard, then? I had always assumed that they just looked the part

In something I read while looking this story up I saw something saying that they are actually harder.

They are diamonds. Just not geologically formed diamonds.
