JFK
« on: Nov 22, 2020, 03:45:02 AM »
Today, 22nd of November, it is 57 years since Kennedy was assassinated. I can still remember it as though it was yesterday

So do I.  It was the night before my 21st birthday.  My (then) girlfriend, future wife and I were strolling along a nearly deserted Richmond high street at about 10pm and saw an Evening Standard placard scrawled with "Kennedy Assassinated".  I thought at first, because it looked so scrawled it was fake news (I guess we had it even then), but subsequent news stands had the same scrawled message so my actual birthday was a bit over shadowed by the next days headlines. I guess that makes it 57 years ago, strange how some events are frozen in our minds.

I can also remember it. I wore black for a week.

Less than two weeks later my father died. 63 was a bad year.

I got to the US about 10 yrs after his death and I remember walking on Sunset Boulevard one day some years later and parked up on a side-street was what looked like a band van which had The Dead Kennedys emblazened on the side. I thought I'd mis-read it but no, it was the name of the, needless to say, punk, band..Quite surprised they got away with such a thing..

I remember the assassination and black theatre afterwards but was a bit too young for it to mean much to me.

It's still a big deal across the pond..With so little history such events are branded on minds and memories..Shame the ideals involved aren't..Just sayin'.

I have just finished a series   The Kennedys : Tragedy and Triumph.

Why were they disliked so much.. ?  Not popular with everyone..

They were rich and popular in their own circle - breeds envy

Some of them also thought that the law was only applicable to the little people. Ted hoofed it leaving his tart to die in a car he had driven into a pond while almost certainly drunk.

I always thought that the fact that Joe junior died in the war and Jack and Robert were assassinated, whilst Ted lived to a ripe old age, proved there is no justice in the world.
One of my fears was that the glamour attached to the family might see Ted in the White House. Like his father, he was no friend of Britain. Some friends visited Boston during the Troubles in NI and were horrified in a bar when the hat was passed round for the ‘fighters for the cause’,and a lot of money went into that hat

then 9/11 happened and the yank found out exactly what freedom fighter did
so the hat was no longer passed round... or rather it no longer got filled

It did give the USA a shock. NORAID still exists, though, although I think with a lower profile
