And if you didn’t line it up correctly, it ruined tyres in no time

I haven't kept up with bike technology but I presume LED lights rule.
Around here no lights at all and pavement or wrong side of the road are all very common. Another reason I have a dashcam - it won't protect my car or tyres but at least it may help stave off prosecution should I run over one who bothers to use the road at all.

That looks like an old fashioned dynamo. My dad had one of those when I was very young.

Yes, & that one isn't lined up correctly.
I was posh as my first 'big' bike had a Dynohub.

There's posh! I'd forgotten those - never able to afford one early on, and when I became a 'serious' cyclist, it wasn't an appropriate piece of kit

The friction dynamo noticeably required more effort when against the tyre (even when adjusted correctly) while the hub ones just worked and you couldn't tell if the lights were on or off. I'm amazed either are still sold.

I saw an amusing hybrid car ad on TV. Like most ads I don't recall the actual car name but the selling point seemed to be that you didn't need to charge it. To my mind that makes it a petrol car with a novel and probably inefficient transmission.
