Christmas spike?
« on: Jan 16, 2021, 05:45:05 PM »
There's an interesting article on the BBC news site posing the question, Did we see a Christmas coronavirus spike?   The general thrust of the article is that although some cases may have been the result of Christmas gatherings, in general, the rising case numbers is mainly a continuing trend partly driven by new covid variants.

Was ruining  Christmas  necessary?  In spite of all the gloom and doom and predictions of mass deaths, it seems to have been a non-event, but I'm sure that our governments will claim credit for it anyway.

It's a coincidence how every time lockdown rules are relaxed there's a jump in the infection rate.

Must be something totally unconnected with people mixing.

If you like, you can read the article and judge for yourself.

When I was a child I used to like the 'join the dots' you got in some colouring books.

The dots I join at the moment are:

Dot 1:The main Covid virus transmission is from person to person via exhaled droplets.

Dot 2: The people have to be quite close together for the exhaled droplets to transmit.

Dot 3: If people aren't socialising close together the chance of transmission is low.

Dot 4: If people are socialising close together the chance of transmission is high.

Explained with just four dots.

Yes. Very interesting and it seems that the spike - i.e. recent increase in cases and deaths, had already begun before the Christmas relaxation. Also, from what the author could discern, the amount of fraternisation over that day was considerably lower than might have been expected under more normal circumstances, and the most probable cause of the increases is that the new strain is more infectious than the original. To my mind, that is the most worrying aspect as it is presumably too soon to know if the existing vaccines will be equally effective against this new strain.

Yes & it's utter stupidity to suggest that just because the other variants may have caused a spike to start it's ok to let Xmas socialising add to the spike & make it much higher than it would have been.
