Over-used phrases in movies..
« on: Mar 01, 2021, 10:25:21 PM »
I know, there are many but some just twang a nerve.. I swear that in an early Cagney film, (1937ish?) his Maw said "My boy's a lotta things but he ain't no killer!"  That phrase, in one of it's many forms, popped up tonight in a film I was about to turn off but which got me to wondering whether we notice these things anymore? " Don't (you dare) die on me!"  Phrases that writers get paid for.. But it's awfully lazy, no?

Not a phrase as such, but why are the baddies almost invariably such rotten shots?

And why are our heroes always shot in the shoulder/ upper rt chest? Opportunity for white bandages across broad, sun-tanned chests? A la Cheyenne Body, John Wayne, Burt Lancaster and every other handsome young cowboy ever favoured by the plot etc et al..
And why does American blood spurt out of a gunshot wound? Why do their cars have everlasting batteries allowing you enough time to dig a grave, chuck a body in and bury it with no soil left over? .. We might be taking these things too seriously Mike.. ;D  I'm like you but always remind myself that these things are made for 12 - 16 olds.. ;D ;D  I'm sure they think they're as sh^t as we do.. ;D

"I don't know what you are talking about" always means oh yes you do and you probably "done it".

Not a phrase, but I've noticed a lot of the baddies in US films are British   ;D

Big studios have reciprocal arrangements Alex so if they use a Brit, we get a Yank or Canadian and vice versa but American actors all like to play a Brit.. Some can, some really can't..Dick Van Dyke syndrome..

Sometimes I guess.. There are hundreds of reciprocals working in film and tv in the English speaking countries..
