« on: Aug 22, 2012, 01:22:49 PM »
we've lived in the same ( council owned ) place for the last 10 years , the cooker and the wall cupboards are in exactly the same positions as they always have been . We've just had our annual gas safety check .....and been told that one of the wall units is too close to the cooker , depiste the fact that we've had this safety check every year since we've lived here ?!?!?? ??? :( :-\

what the (censored) is happening ?

Changes in Building Regulations by the EU Terry I have my Boiler in a large Cupboard and have had to increase the ail ventilators three time over the last few years to meet the new standards

I am now long out of the business, but would point out that many changes in Building Regulations are not retrospective (if something was OK when it was put in, it remains OK until it is replaced by a new one).  I have found in the past that gas fitters and electricians have tried to tell me (for instance) that all my switches and sockets must be moved to meet the new regulations for wheelchair users) and I have proved that the regulation is for new installations and not retrospective, yet have had to get an older electrician in to certify it, because the younger guy would not believe me, even faced with a copy of the latest building reg's.  It is always best to ask for a confirmation from the trade body whether a new regulation is applied retrospectively.

Building regulations are a pain!  We downsized into our bungalow almost two years ago, and had to have a partial re-wire.  In the kitchen we had to have the plugs moved that had been there since the bungalow was built in the 80's, because the plugs were to near the taps, and that wasn't allowed.
"Don't you know?" said Miss Marple.
"No, I don't," said Craddock.  "Do you?"
"Oh, yes, I think so," said Miss Marple.  And she twinkled at him.

Jane, Allthough some electrical regs are a bit over the top this one is a very sensible one, which has been applicable in some form for some considerable time.  You should not be able to have one hand in the Sink/taps and reach out to a socket outlet with the other hand, which is easily done when hurrying while say washing up.
After all, you have only just joined, It would be a shame to read that you had gone to that great art class in the sky so soon.

;D Yes, I do understand that, Sparky.  And I can safely say that will never happen in our kitchen now, well I sincerely hope not!

If it's an EU rule, how come our last stay in France in an apartment had a washing machine (with a light switch on the wall) in the bathroom?  ???
