Gurkhas - Another Government Farce
« on: Jan 05, 2010, 10:34:36 AM »
Whilst this may have seemed a popular thing to do.

Should being in the Army for 4 years entitle you
to move to a Country and live off it for ever?

I would have liked to have seen some thought
put into this.

One thing is clear as Army Charities are also popular
at the moment. What proportion of money is being given
to someone who happened to be the Army for 4 years -
say 1960 to 1963.

John I am very surprised at your comments regarding the Gurkha's , I think if you had lived with them as I did in Malaya, you may have thought differently, I would have trusted them with my life any time. AS for the Gurkha's been in the services for four years I don't think there was many of them that stopped in for as little time as that. So I hope you will have a little more compassion
Yorkie.

Unfortunately compassion comes at a price.

If as you say many served longer - why was 4 years
chosen as the service mark?

It makes no sense to me. The basic figure required from
the army for the first influx of an immediate payment
of £2,000 each is calculated at £24 Million Pounds.

Add to this the costs of providing a home and furnishings,
medical, all other costs and services for the rest of their lives.
(Plus Relatives)

No main stream political party actually came out and queried
costs and the small print.

Perhaps because there is a populist view on this matter.

My solution would have been to pay higher pensions and
give medical and other assistance in their home country.

That is my compassion.

Thanks for your reply John.

Point taken,I am forgetting the economics of this situation.

People will say I am mellowing down in life, but no, I am becoming wiser as I get Older.

I hope no offence taken John, Life is to short.

No offence taken whatsoever.

This is a Forum - hopefully people will post what they feel,
excepting the growth of the thought police...

The Ghurkas have fought for Britain for well over a hundred years, they are loyal, honest and family oriented folk, which is more than can be said for some other  immigrants from abroad.

Yes I know how that sounds, but there are good and bad in every community, and at least with the Ghurkas we know they have self- discipline and are likely to be hardworking additions to Britain's Economy.

Since the EU expansion, we received many thousands of Eastern Europeans, who worked, yet sent their wages home, therefore not helping to rebuild Britain in financial terms.

Ghurka families will be as loyal as their menfolk are to Britain, and it behoves us to welcome thse folk who have fought so hard for us for so little. (their pensions are pitiful in comparison to ours).

Cheers, HG

My eyes are welling up while reading your post.

Not really.

I have no problem with the wonderful nature of many people
throughout the World.

In fact they would show many up here for manners and respect.

This is normally why some 'Brits Abroad' have a certain reputation.

Going back to the  topic - Do you think 4 years service to this
Country is sufficient to reside in the UK 'on us' for the rest
of their lives?

(You forgot to add child and other benefits being sent home by Eastern Europeans)

I did, didn't I?

I feel that the Gurkhas are a special case, due to their constant loyalty over so many years, so that yes, I do feel that four years is enough.

There will never be as many of them as in the case of the East Europeans, so I really think that we can absorb them with much less aggro than other folk.

I don't consider it a Government farce, it was the will of the people in action, the Government wasn't going to change the rules.

Maybe if "we" stopped sending £4M in aid to China we could afford to treat the Ghurka's with the respect they deserve.

I would rather have my tax money spent on someone who was prepared to die for this country that the drug dealing scum bag who has never(and will never) work that lives next door to me.

Why did you allow this to happen?
