Sarahbilly,  While I can quite happily live harmoniously among people wearing Tartan skirts, or Welsh with tall hats and leeks, even Guiness swigging Irish, I could never see myself trying to live in harmony with people whose faces I cannot see, and who are speaking in a unknown language, and I have not the slightest intention of trying.

don't think it has anything to do with eu. that banners such as this have to be removed, if we travel to europe we see signs such as english/british bar, english food served here  full english breakfast, ect. we have to grow up in this country and realise we live in a global world and stop playing "little englanders."

I couldn't agree more SB and I rather think we don't have a choice, not because of politics (although the politicians would like us to think so)  but because of economics.  Being choosy on racial grounds about who and how you trade does not keep a roof over your head or food on the table.
Don't get my personality and my attitude confused.  My personality is me, my attitude depends on you.

i have nothing against english, welsh, irish north/south, in fact all creatures great and small, we should just accept we are all accidents of birth and learn to live with each other in peace and harmony,

Hi, sarabilly, and with your impeccable musical connections I suppose you'd:

"Like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony"   :D :D :D  altogether now.

Best wishes from moi, SB.

I echo your words avalonmpk2; I too am unashamed and proud to be a "little Englander!"  Also for what it is worth, one of my unresolved ambitions was to have a seaside fish and chip emporium.  Who knows, if I should be reincarnated at some future time, I may realise that ambition!

I am in sympathy with Sparky in that that how can we harmonise until the people who choose to come and settle in little England give their hearts ( not religion) to the country making it theirs too. What is it that stops their embrace of the country by not trying to practise that which makes this the England that they too wanted to have.  By learning to join its way of life and not try to set up- little wherever-of the country they left it may go someway to achieving this.

Perhaps this will happen eventually as I am increasingly aware that the young people of immigrant families are doing this and making good citizens.  It is very hard not to impose your own culture on the country you reside in,  this I learned living in South Africa during apartheid.

Wish words Sarah. I go to Greece on a regular basis and all you see are restaurants selling 'English' food such as all day breakfast like you mention. I nor the EU have no problem with that but this story is about a chip shop banner saying the new owners were 'English'. That is totally different. I like you want us to live in harmony.

Being in the EU hasn't dismantled the heritage, tradition and values of this country at all. We still have celebrations for big Royal Family events and all are other national days, but it's in a multicultural society where we can all share the experience together. There's something far more rewarding about that.

And the vast majority where I live wish the hell it was not!

The first time I felt like I was back in the US was when I saw Dublin. It's an international city and there I saw numerous ethnic groups and black faces. What I was used to coming from the very multi cultural northeast US.

I have no problem with different ethnicities in general, having lived among so many diverse cultures growing up.

Recently it's become fashionable to search your genetic geneology.  Plenty have been surprised when they got results which traced human migration patterns. We're more connected then we realize.
