Scrumpy and Traveller... Now I have time but not the garden, still good for interest tho' albeit amid the slate at the front and concrete patio and pots at the back . Mrs T and you have ideal division of labour! But  Scrumpy and I are head cook and bottle washers! I grew tomatoes in pots and beans up a fence  in early town gardening....satisfying too.

I am trying to get ride of some ground Ivy so that I can put some pebbles down..
It is a tough old plant and doesn't seem to take any notice of the strong weed killer that I spray on it..

Is there anyone who could advise please..?
Scumpy, I've had a quick look on Google, seems its almost impossible to get rid of.  Perhaps you could have a more in depth look when you have time?  One solution was Borax, which is harmless so might be worth a try.

When I moved into my last house there was already an established patch of bamboo which acted as a screen.  It started to take over the garden and had thick fibrous roots which were too hard to dig out.  I tried everything to get rid of this bamboo and the only solution was to burn it out which is what I did. It was a nightmare.

Ground Ivy must be the toughest plant to dispose of .. Other than a flame thrower I think it will be impossible to clear the area completely.I will just continue with the strong weed killer ..
It is dying .. on the top but the roots are really hanging in there .
In a couple of days I will cover the area with DOUBLE plastic sheeting .
Then I will put pebbles mixed with shingles on the top ..
Any betting on whether it will get through !
Everything will be alright in the end, and if it’s not alright, its not the end.

If you are putting a double layer of plastic down, are you allowing for drainage?
If it's on a slight slope you should be okay, but if it's on the level, make sure that it's slightly higher in the centre.

Scrumpy...I did a similar job on the front garden it worked, I got the big strong gardener.  He put down heavy duty black plastic first then my choice of blue/grey slate.  I then by myself put a few stepping stones angled across  to break it up, planting through it a group of spiky plants and rock plants adding a few rockery stones in a group just for a bit of interest. Never tired of it.

It is well drained Coastal.. It is a patch on ground Ivy that hangs over a retainer wall .. The ground area is only small.. It really looked lovely but I needed to do something before it took over ..
In another part of the garden it is covering a fence .. I don't mind that because I think it's keeping the fence up ..

Firenze .. I'm doing it on the cheap because I don't want to spend my (new) car savings . Otherwise I would have got myself a big strong gardener!

Just one other thing: prior to putting plastic in position water the ground with a solution of copper sulphate dissolved in HOT water. Never fails 1/4 pound per gallon

I didn't Avalon! I stabbed it with a fork and the little devils popped up now and again for a while, pulled them and 10 years on they must have taken their kit bags with them,  an odd one pops up but generally  never seen again'.
