Please tell me what this plant is!
« on: Aug 09, 2015, 06:55:58 PM »
All of you gardeners out there, I'd be grateful if anyone can identify this plant for me:

Thanks!

I'm sure somebody who knows much more than I do will tell me how wrong I am C68 but it bears a resemblance to Soapwort.

I'm by no means a gardener C68, it just looked a lot like something that self-seeded here once and I was told by one who IS (or was sadly) a gardener, that that was what it was. Having said that, whatever it is, it looks very healthy.

Is that a wild flower that has migrated (sorry to use that painful word at this time) into your garden or is it cultivated? What sort of height is it?
This post is my opinion, which you may not like, but I'm entitled to it.

I have got something very similar in my garden.  It was inherited so I don't know what it is.   It flowers briefly spring/early summer and has pink flowers which are the same shape as yours.   If I tidy it up quite vigorously it sometimes flowers again. It spreads a lot each year but does not grow higher.  My gardening friend thinks it is some sort of hardy perennial geranium of which there are hundreds, so perhaps you could start searching along those lines.  The leaves on yours look to be nicer than mine though.

If all else fails citizen you can download your pic at NaturePlus. It's part of the Natural History Museum and has experts galore.

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions. The plant grows to a height of up to three feet, and it comes from a tuber which comes up again each year. I always thought of it as a type of dahlia but have decided it isn't. The flowers also open in the evening. The nearest likeness I have seen is nicotiana.

Three feet is tall C68.  I have many years gardening behind me (and some in front hopefully) but don't know what it is.

Shame about the fig firenze.  You'll have to give it a good talking to and threaten it unless it does better next year  ;D

Your friends sound very sensible to me firenze.  I love brandy (a fairly good one) so I don't buy it because it would call to me!  :(

I think it is a kind of balsam. If you google "balsam" you may find pictures of the different kinds of balsam.
