Can`t say that I`ve seen this one, Citizen but thanks to others on the forum we may get a correct name for it yet.  :D :-*

I think I may have cracked it, but then again, don't get your hopes up.  Following a link from a page on balsam, as submitted by Pipkin I found Mirabilis Japala [or was it Japa something else], otherwise known as a 4'clock plant.  One of them looks exactly like yours and it habits seem to match.  Alas it isn't the same as mine so I am still none the wiser. I think it is invasive in some climates, but not in ours.

Stellar detection work Stella...That looks like the baby. Interesting plant, makes me wish I liked gardening a bit more ;)  (forced to do it as a nipper, disliked it ever since.)

Looking good but still not quite sure about the leaves on your plant. This is the 4o'clock plant (Mirabilis macfarlanei)

CC, the flowers are exactly right - even the colour. Have a look at mirabilis jalapa which seems to make the difference to the leaves?

CC, I am very grateful, nevertheless, for the help and interest shown in getting this resolved.  :)

Great to get an answer, as I knew you would, Citizen, as I hate to be kept awake at night wondering about these mysteries.  ;D :-*

Rita, thank you. I do feel rather as though I am cheating, since these plants come up vigorously every year and provide a lavish display, and people may think I have worked slavishly to achieve the result, when in fact they just want a bit of water and some feed occasionally.

Just thought I would add to this thread - any thread.  I haven't got anything to say but my broadband and tv has been off for 30 hours [due to changeover to a better service or something]. I have been bereft and I am desperate to type anything.   Glad you are on the right track for your plant even if the exact strain has been problematic.

What does it matter stellamaris, admire the plants annd smell the roses - no one grows these now.  We had a bower festooned with beautiful smelling roses once, not smelled a rose since a charming man bought me roses :D ;D yes they did!!
