i have a good friend who was called up to the Navy [no mentions on here the Senior Service] any way he got put on a charge for not saluting an officer during his basic training, and so on his first leave home he saluted postmen, bus drivers, anyone wi a peaked cap..

Thanks to joining the Sea Cadets   killed any  desire to join the navy.  I  should have put in  for  the  airforce  but opted for army life instead  which turned out to be a wise  choice.  While my RAF pals   did their 2 or 3 years in the  grey  austere UK  I  was enjoying  8 weeks  cruising and 18 months in tropical  sunshine  plus shops  overladen with  chocolates and sweets  that were still  on  ration (if you could get any)  in the UK.

Within spitting distance of Uppingham was RAF North Luffenham: RCAF Sabres and latterly Metor NF11s followed by radar calibration Brigands and then becoming the home of RAF radio and telecommunications servicing and Midland Radar.  Following the exit of the RAF, the army moved in but presently I believe the site is under care and maintenance.
My hubby did some of his National Service in North Luffenham Johned way back in 1947/9.
After his stint at North Luffenham he was sent to Cottesmore to work on Mosquitoes. He also worked on the first Meteor. He was sent home on indefinite leave in 1947 because we had SO much snow that year they could not get the planes off the ground. It was up to 30 feet in some places and THE worst winter I have ever lived through.
He said he enjoyed his time in the National Service and only wished it was brought back again to straighten some of the yobs out of today.

yes but no rifles would be required, picks and shovels.... they could be building pensioners bungalows, puting us all together with a central unit for eating and entertainment, with community heating and eating...lol... at very little cost...

Interesting to see that many would like to see the re-introduction of National Service as a means to sorting out today's yobs!
Sadly, that wouldn't work.  It wouldn't take the girls long to work out that getting pregnant would be their 'get out of NS free' card, closely followed by screams of 'not fair!' from the boys.

I would not want us to rely on lazy yobs to join the ranks of our services, it needs keen  guys who want to be there.

And girls!  I'm retired now, but I did over 22 years in the RAF.
